If you live on the East or West coast, you're in luck! You have MANY good stores filled with all kinds of "healthy basics".

If you don't, check out any good-sized health food store near you, and try small quantities of lots of different foods. When you determine what you like and what your family will EAT, you can order in larger quantities from local food coops, or from mailorder companies.

Food Coops
A cooperative or coop is an organization owned and controlled democratically by its members. There are over 300 food cooperatives in the U.S.!

To find a coop near you, follow the link below, or simply type in "food coop" in your search window. With so many small coops across the country, you'll want to remember that most of them order their supplies from LARGE coops. If you don't find a small one in your area, contact larger ones up to 3-4 states away and ask for a listing of groups in your area. Most often, you'll find a group of 5-25 people who order on a once each month basis who would be happy to have a new member to help with ordering, separating or organizing supplies.

Azure Standard is a wonderful company out of Dufur, Oregon that services coops in the Northwest and points beyond. The general area of delivery is Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii, and parts of Utah, North Dakota, and California. To find a coop near you, you can contact them through their website at azurefarm.com, or by calling (541) 467-2230.

Ozark Cooperative Warehouse services thousands of coops in Oklahoma and many surrounding states. At their site, you'll also find the following links to coops in these states:

* North Farm Cooperatives: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio.
* Tuscon Cooperative Warehouse: Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico.
* Northeast Cooperatives: Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania.
* Midwest Organic Alliance: Information about buying co-operatively.

Have fun shopping! I sure enjoy going "hog wild" and ordering a variety of things we've never tried before. What a great TASTE experience! Very few of the "odd" things have turned out too "weird" to add to our long list of favorites. Many of the foods we think are strange are staples in other countries...and it's those other countries that have far better health than we as Americans do. Think "ethnic!" and try something NEW!
